| Knowing
that computers are imbedded in every field and area of endeavor, children
who know how to use them to accomplish tasks, express ideas and create
will have an edge. Thanks to our superior ratios, children have easy
access to computer technology at Pear Tree Point School and use it
regularly. With a bank of desktop computers in every classroom and
a large collection of laptops, students at Pear Tree Point School
enjoy the advantages of these powerful tools. The computers are readily
available for student use throughout the day.
We
use the computers to reinforce learning in reading, mathematics
and writing, using sophisticated educational software. Through the
availability of our high-speed Internet connection to all classes,
teachers and students use computers for Internet research on topics
related to history, geography, social science, science and the arts.
In our Spanish program, we also use the Internet capability to send
e-mails to pen pals in South America. Teachers and students use
the computer technology for presentations using software from the
Microsoft Office collection, which includes Word, Excel and Power
Point.
In
the upper grades, students use laptop computers in a wireless environment.
Fifth graders have an all-laptop program whereby each student has
an IBM Thinkpad to use in class throughout the school year. Fourth
graders also each have a computer to use for writing. We have found
that the most advanced local independent schools begin laptop programs
in grade seven, so we want to make sure that our students are well
prepared.
Along
with computers, each classroom has a large video-monitor, which
is capable of showing videotape or DVD films and displaying computer
images sent directly from the lead computer to the monitor.
